Letter 18880701

Garden Grove,

July 1, 1888

Dear brother;

We received your letter some time ago. Was glad to hear from you. We are all well and hope we’ll find you well. It is very warm today and has been for the last few days. We had a very late spring and have had plenty of rain. We have a very nice prospect for a crop. And we’ll have plenty of garden after awhile. We have 190 sweet potato plants, about 100 cabbage and over 60 tomato that all look nice. We have been very busy this spring. Ida stayed with me for 3 weeks. We have had a hand for over two months but he leaves tomorrow so then I won’t have so much to do. Bart has been working some at the hardware store in Leroy. He traded our mules for a new binder and sold the old one for forty dollars. Bart and the hardware man was up to Joe’s yesterday. Traded him a new two seated buggy for a horse.

Ambroses was down two week’s ago. They had been to Mr. Jorber’s funeral the day before. I suppose you have heard he was struck with lightning on his way home from the grove and killed. Old Mr. Pryor died yesterday morning. Was to be buried this afternoon at four o’clock. There was to be a Sunday school convention to day at the Dunkard Church. How I would like to have been there. I think you must have had a good trip since you left Decatur. And I don’t think Thede thought much of any of us even his little boy to go through Oceola and not stop. Well Elmer I can’t think of any more to write this time so I will close. Write soon.

                        Ever your sister Lillie
