Letter 18911004

Leroy, Iowa

October 4, 1891

Dear Brother, We received your letter some time ago but have neglected to answer it. Was very glad to hear from you. Hope this will find you well & doing well. We are all well. The three boys attends school. Bart is busy most of the time & of course I am & always expect to be.
The day we got your letter I was washing . I thought to my self I will answer it right away but every day brought it’s work & the letter got put off. I can’t write when I am tired nor when there is any noise round.
This is Sunday night. The children are in bed. Bart is away with Chub on business concerning a sale he (Chub) is going to have next Wednesday. It is a very cool night. Expect it will frost. Have not had any frost yet, it has been a beautiful autumn with us, cool & dry. Have not had much rain since harvest. I like to live here very well. We have a nice home & very good neighbors so far.
I have not gone out much for I can’t always be ready. There is Sunday school & meeting every Sunday, good templars lodge every Tuesday night, prayer meeting every Thursday night & the ladies aid society every two weeks.
I have been very busy this fall. caned 25 gal. of fruit, made nearly 5 gal jell, 4 gal. butter & 3 ½ gal. preserves. Besides 4 gal. pickles 7 5 gal. kraut. It was early to make kraut but we had to do it to save our cabbage. We had a good garden. Have a nice lot of nuts for winter. Over 2 bu. Hickory nuts, 1 ½ bu. Walnut, 1 peck hazelnuts & 1 ½ bu. Popcorn.
So if you come home Christmas, be sure & stop & make us a good visit. We are right on the road. We will have a good time. Bring me a present no matter how small from Chicago.
I expect to go up home in a couple of weeks for a few days. I suppose you have heard Ambroes’s are going to move away. It will be lonesome when they are gone but of course we can’t all be together. Have not heard from any of the folks for some time.
My love & best wishes to you. Write soon. Your sister,
Lillie Good night.
